First report of alder yellows phytoplasma associated with common alder (Alnus glutinosa) in the Republic of Macedonia

Abstract: During 2013, common alder (Alnus glutinosa) growing in Macedonia were observed with symptoms of leaf discoloration and yellowing. DNA was were extracted from symptomatic plants and analyzed by PCR using phytoplasma specific primers. The presence of a phytoplasma was demonstrated in the symptomatic plants and the PCR product was cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis showed the presence of phytoplasmas belonging to the 16SrV-D subgroup (4 isolates) while one grouped within the map-FD1 (FD70) cluster of the 16SrV.
