Palm damage due to Oryctes rhinoceros and virus incidence in trial plots in Central Java

Abstract: In 1976-1980, Orctes rhinoceros beetles infected with the "Sumatra strain" of Baculovirus oryctes (Oryctes rhinoceros nudivirus) were released in trial plots in Central Java, Indonesia. Two hundred and fifty females or the same number of males were released per 25 ha plot, with a third untreated plot per group. This was repeated in 4 areas and in total, there were 8 treated plots (4 each for males and 4 for females) and 4 untreated plots.
In 1987, the palm damage in the treated plots remained low, while it had decreased significantly in the untreated plots. Sanitation might have contributed to the decline, at least in some plots. On the other hand, the virus incidence was very low at 3.6% despite the mass release in 1976. This might be due to resistance to the virus in O. rhinoceros populations of Java, see Zelazny et al., 1989.
