Melissococcus plutonius corrig. (ex White 1912) Bailey & Collins 1983 - (European foulbrood)

This Gram positive bacterium causes a globally important disease of honeybee larvae. Infections can lead to colony collapse. The honey bee larvae become infected through contaminated food, fed to them by the workers. The bacterium multiplies inside the gut and leads to the death of infected larvae. The disease becomes more prevalent when the colony is under stress like when exposed to insecticides (Wood et al., 2020).
