Lymantriidae - (tussock moths)

The family contains important pests like the gypsy moth. The caterpillars have groups of long setae and often 4 long tufts of hair which are usually coloured. The hairs can cause skin irritation when touched. The adults do not feed and the females of some species cannot fly.

The taxonomy of this family is under discussion, especially its relationship to the family of Erebidae.
