This biting midge is found in Europe, northern Africa and parts of western Asia. It can be common in some areas and bites humans, domestic animals, but also birds (Slama et al., 2015). It is a suspected vector of the bluetongue virus. Taxonomically, it is regarded as a complex of several closely related species.
