Cornops aquaticum (weed bioagent) (Bruner) - (water hyacinth grasshopper)

The grasshopper is a natural enemy of water hyacinth weeds (Eichhornia crassipes). It also attacks other Eichhornia species. The species is native to South American, but has been released in South Africa.

Although Eichhornia crassipes is one of the worst aquatic weeds and C. aquaticum appears to be specific to this and closely related plant species, few attempts have been made to use it as a biological control agent.
