Carthamus lanatus (weed) L. - (woolly distaff thistle)

This thistle is a weed of pastures as well as crops. It is native to the Mediterranean region, but is now widely distributed. For example it is a problem in Australia and North America. Dense infestations have been reported where the thorny fruits get mixed with the wool of sheep, degrading the wool, or contaminate hay and grain.
