This is a small plant genus. The fruits of Akebia quinata (chocolate vine) are eaten in Japan and this species is also grown as ornamental in some countries (e.g. Garibaldi et al., 2004). However, it can be also invasive (Brunel et al., 2020). In China Akebia trifoliata is grown for medicinal purposes.
