The fungus causes loose smut on cereals. Yield losses are typically less than 1%, but can exceed 50% in some regions under certain conditions. The disease is seed-borne and the fungus colonizes the florets and overwinters as mycelium in the embryo. After germination it infects the growing point and later the flowers producing black teliospores. Management involves mainly the use of resistant cultivars.

Vernacular names
• English: loose smut of cereals
• Français: charbon du blé et de l'orge
charbon nu chez l'orge
