Geminiviridae

The members of this family have particles with a characteristic twin quasi-isometric structure. They can infect both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, including various crops and are often found in subtropical and tropical regions.

The genome consists of one or two circular, single-stranded DNA moleculaes with 4-8 genes and about 2700 nucleotides. It is expressed from both strands of a double-stranded DNA replicative intermediate. There are 7 recognized and proposed genera in this family. These are characterized by their host range, transmission mechanisms, genome organisation and sequence similarities.
