It is also found in Europe and Asia but is not such a devastating disease in these regions. The disease was introduced into northwestern parts of North America in the early 1900s, and white pines have little resistance against this fungus. It has now spread over large parts of western North America. Pines are the aecial host and ''Ribes'' species the telial host for the fungus. The planting of ornamental ''Ribes'' species is not allowed in some regions in order to reduce the risk for this disease.
