Vespidae (veterin. pest wasps)

This page deals with members of the family Vespidae that are pests of humans and livestock. The Vespidae are social insects which construct paper nests. They feed mainly on other insects which can be beneficial in cropping areas but environmentally harmful for introduced species like Vespula vulgaris in New Zealand. They also feed on decaying meat or fish, fruits and nectar. When they feel threatened, they attack humans and mammals with a painful sting.
