This family includes around 30 species of dampwood termites. They are found mainly in temperate and subtropical parts of Australia, North America and some other regions. Several species are considered to by pests of wooden structures like Zootermopsis angusticollis. Usually only moist and even rotting wood is infested. However, some species also infest living trees like Porotermes adamsoni.
The living species in this family have been previously assigned to the family Termopsidae. However, that family now only includes extinct species.
